When you have children, you need to know how to stop drinking. For most people, a drink is relaxing, but for some it is an addiction. It is not their fault; alcohol can be addictive. If you or someone you care about is addicted, here's how to stop drinking.

1. Recognise that you have a problem, and need to stop drinking.

2, If you can, tell your partner/friends that you're going to try to stop drinking. Ask for their support and help.

3, If you want to stop drinking, consider putting alcohol somewhere that is more difficult to access: a garage, garden shed etc.

4. Try giving yourself alcohol free days. Break any routine that you have in order to stop drinking.

5. To stop drinking, identify when you usually drink and avoid those situations, or plan what to do instead at that time.

6. Does alcohol take the place of food? If so, to stop drinking, allow yourself a snack at that time of the day.

7. Try drinking a low alcohol version of your drink of choice.

8. Think about why you drink. Are there other ways of resolving the issues?

9. If you feel stressed, don't drink, do something else - dance/exercise/sing - anything that takes you away from drink and that lowers your stress levels.

10. If you know how to stop drinking, but it's bigger than you, try Alcoholics Anonymous for local groups and support. It's a fantastic organisation. You will not be judged; it's a confidential and member-directed support group that is invaluable. A source of friendship and real, honest support.

For more help with how to stop drinking, try Alcoholics Anonymous or contact your GP. Your health, your future and your family's future depend on it.
