Why are the most vulnerable children in care homes run for profit?

For-profit children's homes provide poorer quality services for children in care than homes run by Local Authorities. The University of Oxford’s Dr Bach-Mortensen said,

‘It is well known, huge profits are being made by companies running these homes, but the response has typically been that the quality of the services justify the costs. Our research suggests quality is not the same in both sectors and should be of concern to commissioners.

Parents and staff at a Doncaster Care home for special needs children had over 100 concerns ignored, as our most vulnerable children were abused and bullied.

Privately owned companies are profiting from the misery of children to the tune of millions of pounds every year. It's easy money to buy up properties in deprived areas in, say, the North of England and then send children miles away from their homes to be 'looked after' by a company whose driver is profit.

Wake up! Put children's homes into the hands of charities and local authorities that are accountable.

Better still, stop placing children in care!
